We invite you to join us in a new group called Performing Arts Youth.  To be a member, all you have to do is participate in some of the activities.  You can get more involved by helping to plan and by inviting people to the events, coming up with ideas for monthly activities and by helping to keep the flow of information going about music, theatre, dance and other performance opportunities in our communities.

In addition to the activities, the group can serve as a chance to network about performance opportunities like Sourland Mountain Players, youth orchestras, talent shows, members looking for instrumentalists and accompanists, performers looking for others to form a rock or jazz band, just sharing performance and related experiences or asking questions and opinions about how to handle a performance situation or opportunity.

We set up an internet list group discussion. This is how it works. You subscribe to the list. If you are a member and you send a message, it will go to everyone. Anyone can subscribe who is interested in theater and music. Parents are also welcome to join, so don’t say anything you wouldn’t want your parents to see.  Hopefully you all will join.

Send message to nj_pay-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and follow the instructions in the message you receive to participate in our discussion group.

As far as activities – we have set up Performance Fridays at the Mary Jacobs Library in Rocky Hill..  It can be sort of like a monthly clubhouse where we can celebrate our interest in the performing arts and also have a night out connecting with other youth of like minds.  We can have a little committee that decides what we would do with each monthly meeting, be it watching a show, inviting a speaker, having performances, etc.

We believe in using our talents to work for a better community, state, nation and world.  We can perform at senior centers and play in support of causes we believe in.  We can organize benefit concerts for relief efforts. There are other groups in town that we can work with including the Young Musician Volunteer Association, around such relief efforts.

Some events we can have can be a comedy night, a poetry night, a hip-hop original rap and original song night, talks about how to form a band, when they decide which musical they are doing at the Middle School we can have a movie night to watch a film version of it.  We can have all sorts of such events – all of which will have an element of fun built into them.

We will also put together group events, like a trip to see a local musical or concert where we can all sit together - like Dracula, the Musical at Kelsey theatre in October.

We are hoping that many will work with us to make this happen.  While we will get some help from our parents – this will be our group and we will run the things etc.  Of course, we will allow our parents to look over our shoulders and keep an eye on what we do so that families feel comfortable about joining our group.

The potential for our group is unlimited.  We will create a network of support for our sorts of minds.  Sometimes artists march to a different drummer and for that reason we sometimes have trouble fitting in with the “in” crowds.  This group will create an “in” crowd for us that is inclusive, that promotes unity across gender. race, ethnic, religious lines, as well as differently able.  The common chord will be an appreciation and participation in the performing arts.

This is the idea that we like to share with everyone.  We believe we can make this happen.  Let’s work together on spreading the word of our new Performing Arts Youth group!  Thank you.
